Dragons open with big win

Silver Creek's defense too much for Borden

SELLERSBURG — The Silver Creek girls’ basketball team outscored Borden 21-5 in the the first quarter, and went on to a 58-32 victory over Borden on Friday in its first contest of the season.

The Dragons forced 12 turnovers in the first seven minutes.

“They came out and pressed us and we had trouble with it,” Borden coach Charlie Gardner said.

Behind sophomore Mandi Martin, who had a game-high 19 points, the Dragons built a 40-11 halftime lead before being outscored by the Braves 21-18 in the second half.

“We were just fighting from behind all night,” Gardner said. “We played hard in the second half.”

Senior Maribeth Rogers added 12 points for the Dragons. Erin Mikel led Borden with nine points and Allison Rademacher added six points and seven rebounds.

The Dragons host 1-0 Jeffersonville next Friday. The No. 3 Red Devils were victorious in their season opener 85-36 over North Harrison.

Borden (1-10 is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Crothersville to face the 2-0 Tigers.

  • KICK IT: SIU has a spring in its step

    The preparations are over and Southern Indiana United’s select teams have sprung into action.
    This year, the club once again has two teams playing in the prestigious Indiana Soccer League — U16 Mavericks and U17 Rampage. Both of these teams, coached by Michael Dennis and Bruce Rigsby, will finish their spring campaigns at the Indiana State Cup, which will start on Friday, May 14.

    All week, the finger has been primarily pointed at Carl Edwards for him causing the late accident last Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway that sent Brad Keselowski into the fence — roof-first.
    But I do not solely blame Edwards for the wreck that cost him only a love tap on the wrist, which was a measly three weeks of double-secret NASCAR probation.
