HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Eve's six treys lead Pioneers to first win
Senior scores 26 in 61-46 triumph at Shawe
Senior Megan Eve nailed a career-high six 3-pointers to lead the Providence girls’ basketball team to its first victory of the season on Tuesday at Shawe Memorial in Madison, 61-46.
Eve scored a game-high 26 points, just three off her career high. Teammate Katy Flanagan recorded a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Junior Kallie Ash added 15 points.
It was the earliest the Pioneers (1-2) have collected their first victory in a season since the 2004-05 campaign when they prevailed in their opener. Providence bounced back after suffering a 94-48 home loss last Friday to Class 2A No. 2 Austin.
“It was good to get that first win,” second-year Providence head coach Brad Burden said. “It’s good for our kids’ confidence. The kids worked hard.”
The Pioneers’ next game is a week from tonight when they will visit Pekin Eastern.
• Mustangs fall to Austin: Katy McIntosh scored a game-high 36 points to lead visiting Austin past New Washington, 83-59.
Two Mustangs (1-1) scored in double figures. Junior Casey Johnson led the way with 18 points, while teammate Chloe Franklin had 15.
“We just played against a great basketball team,” New Washington assistant coach Kirsti Holloway said. “Our inexperience showed. We took some ill-advised shots. But we can take a lot from this game.”
The Mustangs will travel to Henryville for their Southern Athletic Conference opener on Friday.
• Offense lets Generals down in loss: Clarksville scored just 14 points in the first half of a 58-39 loss to host Trinity Lutheran.
Generals’ coach Troy Mitchell said his team missed too many easy shots.
“We struggled horribly on offense tonight,” he said. “We missed a lot of easy baskets.”
Trinity outscored Clarksville in every period and led 26-14 at the half.
Cassandra Mulford led Clarksville with 14 points. Teammate Bronte Miley had 10. Both hit a pair of 3-pointers. Kiersten Hall had six points and eight rebounds for the Generals.
Clarksville (1-2) will host Christian Academy of Indiana on Saturday.
• Braves’ comeback falls short: Visiting Borden was outscored 23-15 by Crothersville in the third period and its fourth-quarter comeback fell just short in a 55-50 Southern Athletic Conference loss.
Borden coach Charlie Gardner said, after scoring just 17 points in the first half, his offense began to click in the second half.
“We came out and played much harder and we were getting the ball to the rim,” Gardner said. “We got some things moving there.”
The Braves’ Erin Mikel scored 18 of her game-high 28 points in the second half, and teammate McKenna Williams scored nine of her 13 after the break.
“We had a much better effort tonight,” Gardner said. “We just couldn’t get it done in the end.”
The Braves (1-2, 0-1 SAC) will host 1-0 Pekin Eastern on Friday.

IN THE FAST LANE: Don’t just blame Edwards
All week, the finger has been primarily pointed at Carl Edwards for him causing the late accident last Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway that sent Brad Keselowski into the fence — roof-first.
But I do not solely blame Edwards for the wreck that cost him only a love tap on the wrist, which was a measly three weeks of double-secret NASCAR probation. -
